A Via Ferrata, meaning "iron path" in Italian, is a protected climbing route. Protecting you with steel cables, ladders, and other fixed anchors, such as bridges and rungs, for climbers to use.

Essential gear includes gloves (preferably leather or fingerless), a mid-layer insulated jacket, a waterproof shell jacket, at least 1 liter of water, snacks, a cell phone/camera, and sunscreen. You'll also need a UIAA-certified climbing helmet, harness, and Via Ferrata lanyard, along with appropriate footwear, like hiking shoes or approach shoes with sticky rubber soles.

If you have limited rock climbing experience or have never done a via ferrata then hiring a guide is recommended. If you want to complete the Gold Mountain Via Ferrata, then a guide is required. Guides can help navigate difficult sections and offer additional safety on your adventure.

The difficulty varies. If you can handle a three-mile hike and climb ladders, you'll likely do well on the Gold Mountain or Ouray Via Ferrata. The difficulty is rated using the Fletcher/Smith system, ranging from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), with an additional letter indicating the alpine commitment.
