Via Ferrata FAQ

  • A Via Ferrata, meaning "iron path" in Italian, is a protected climbing route. Protecting you with steel cables, ladders, and other fixed anchors, such as bridges and rungs, for climbers to use.

  • Essential gear includes gloves (preferably leather or fingerless), a mid-layer insulated jacket, a waterproof shell jacket, at least 1 liter of water, snacks, a cell phone/camera, and sunscreen. You'll also need a UIAA-certified climbing helmet, harness, and Via Ferrata lanyard, along with appropriate footwear, like hiking shoes or approach shoes with sticky rubber soles.

  • If you have limited rock climbing experience or have never done a via ferrata then hiring a guide is recommended. If you want to complete the Gold Mountain Via Ferrata, then a guide is required. Guides can help navigate difficult sections and offer additional safety on your adventure.

  • The difficulty varies. If you can handle a three-mile hike and climb ladders, you'll likely do well on the Gold Mountain or Ouray Via Ferrata. The difficulty is rated using the Fletcher/Smith system, ranging from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), with an additional letter indicating the alpine commitment.

  • Ouray offers three routes. The Gold Mountain Via Ferrata is a local favorite, featuring more vertical climbing on ladders and spectacular views above Ouray. It requires about 5 hours and offers a more private experience without wait times.
