THE BASECAMP OURAY DIFFERENCE

Ice climbing requires more than just tools—it demands expertise. At Basecamp Ouray, our team is comprised of AMGA-trained professionals dedicated to your success and safety. We don't just teach technique; we teach decision-making, hazard recognition, and the mountain judgment necessary for a lifetime of climbing, whether you're in the Ice Park or deep in the backcountry.

ICE CLIMBING FAQ

For guided trips with us, all technical gear is included—harness, helmet, ice axes, boots and crampons. You'll need warm layered clothing (no cotton), insulated waterproof gloves (we will provide gloves if necessary), and a water bottle. We recommend hand warmers and extra gloves since ice climbing is cold work.

Ice climbing has inherent risks—falling ice, cold temperatures, and technical terrain. However, with proper instruction, quality equipment, and AMGA-trained guides, these risks are managed effectively. We teach you to recognize hazards, use equipment correctly, and climb safely from day one.

No. Ice climbing uses different techniques and movement patterns than rock climbing. Many people try ice climbing with no prior climbing experience. The learning curve is steep but manageable—most beginners are climbing vertical ice by the end of their first day.

Ice climbing is physically demanding, requiring upper body endurance, core strength, and cardiovascular fitness. That said, proper technique reduces how much strength you need. If you can hike comfortably and have reasonable upper body fitness, you can start ice climbing. Terrain difficulty can be adjusted to your fitness level.
