Our Guides
Jason Doyle, Guide
Jason was born and raised in Minnesota. As an adult, he lived in Texas for 15 years while racing professional motocross and teaching people of all ages to ride dirt bikes. As his motorcycle racing years came to a close, Jason discovered that rock climbing gave him the same thrill and adrenaline that dirt bikes had for so many years. With 5 years of rock climbing experience under his belt, he wanted to step up his game. So along with his wife, they moved from the hills of Austin Texas to the mountains of Ouray Colorado. He’ll tell you it’s one of the best decisions they’ve ever made. When he’s not climbing, Jason is either trail running with his dog, river surfing with his wife, or editing videos for multiple yoga Youtubers he works with. In 2020 he was nicknamed “Jason 5 Star Stamos” by one of his many happy guiding clients. Is it because he’s so good looking like John Stamos? Is it because he’s got a perfect track record of 5 star reviews? Or is it because he’s seen every episode ever of Full House? He invites you to come find out why he owns that nickname on your next unforgettable mountain adventure!

Xander Bianchi, Guide
Xander has called the San Juan mountains home for just over six years. He moved to Ouray to work as an ice farmer, and has dedicated each winter season to the ice park since. When he left behind a career in an engineering-related field, there was a vacuum created in the area of mechanical problem-solving - this led him to join Ouray Mountain Rescue and begin developing skills as a technical rope rescue practitioner. He now works as an instructor for Rigging for Rescue, where he leads week-long seminars on high-angle rescue techniques with a diverse range of civilian and military SAR groups. Most recently, Xander started a company to design and build via ferrata routes, with the first project slated to be completed locally in early summer 2021. When not in Ouray, Xander also spends a significant amount of time in the Southern Levant climbing, putting on free self-rescue workshops for local climbers, and contributing to grassroots re-bolting campaigns.

Owen Juell, Guide
Owen is a San Juan Local. Born and raised in Ridgway, he calls these mountains home. When he's not in class or working another job, he spends his time climbing, skiing, kayaking, and exploring the mountains. He is currently studying Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University and often finds himself replacing sleep with skiing and climbing, as 24 hours just isn’t enough time in a day to fit in studies, fun, and sleep. Owen joined Ridgway Secondary School’s climbing team in high school and quickly fell in love with the sport, deciding to pursue it past recreation with the mentorship of a local guide and friend. He has found a passion in sharing climbing and the places it takes him with others.

Nico Leis, Guide
Nico is a native Georgian who traded the beauty of the forested hills for the grandeur of the craggy mountains when he moved out West to pursue his passion for climbing. His original introduction to pushing his body in the mountains came from long distance thru-hiking and trail running. He enjoys the act of moving and connecting with his body and pushing himself to perform even when it gets very difficult. He treats climbing as a spiritual endeavor - he has learned so much about himself and the world around him by challenging himself in the mountains. Whether he’s running ridges, climbing splitter cracks, speed climbing big walls, swinging ice tools, getting pumped on hard sport routes, bouldering or summiting peaks - he is most in his element when he is moving his body through challenging terrain. His favorite places to climb are: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Ouray, Joshua Tree, Yosemite, and Indian Creek. Some of his proudest personal accomplishments in the mountains are: climbing “The Nose” on El Capitan in 12 hours, free climbing “Golden Gate” on El Capitan, sending a 20 foot roof crack called “Separate Reality” on his first try, doing a linkup of 7 multi-pitch routes totalling 60 pitches in 9 hours in Red Rocks, and free climbing the spectacular finger crack “Moonlight Buttress” in Zion. Nico’s greatest passion is sharing his personal love for the mountains with others. His proudest guiding accomplishments are: teaching a couple how to self-sufficiently climb multi-pitch rock, taking a dad and his daughter rock climbing for her first time and showing her that she could do more than she ever imagined, helping someone realize her lifetime goal of summiting Mt. Rainier after failing multiple times previously, and watching the excitement in someone’s eyes when he felt the “click” of proper ice climbing technique, and made it to the top of one of the hardest routes in the Ouray Ice Park. When Nico is not climbing, he is seeking a healthy life balance - he enjoys playing ping pong, pool, ultimate frisbee, and chess. He also likes to river surf, cook for himself and for his friends, do yoga, and meditate. Nico is a Wilderness First Responder and Leave No Trace Trainer, and he has completed his AMGA Advanced Rock Guide Course/Exam and an Avalanche Level 1 course.

Our Partners:
We are proud to have Rab as our clothing sponsor. Our guides abuse their gear day in and day out, trusting their clothing against the harshest conditions in the San Juans. So when we were looking for a company to work with, durability, quality, and value were at the top of our list. They use cutting edge materials as well as time-tested ones such as premium quality European down. Nothing fancy or over-engineered – just honest, hard-working pieces that you’d rather repair than replace. By climbers for climbers. More than thirty years since their founding, they continue to find inspiration in the untamed spirit of the mountains where we climb, the friendships we forge on the peak, and their enduring mission: to awaken the climber in everyone and equip them for the ascent.

Communication in the mountains is paramount to safety and success, which is why you’ll see our guides sporting Rocky Talkies in the field. Right now, there’s no one in the market making radios that are as reliable, durable, and lightweight as Rock Talkie. As a company, they pride themselves on doing things differently:
They’re committed to using high-quality components, batteries, and materials while still producing an affordable radio.
They strive to give realistic range and battery life expectations in our marketing.
Every radio that they sell is hand tested by their team in Denver.
Their radios are backed by a generous warranty and return policy.
They also understand that accidents can still happen even with perfect communication. That's why they donate $2 per radio to search and rescue teams around the country. Because, at the end of the day, their goal is to give you peace of mind to push your limits doing what you love.
