Backcountry Ice Climbing
2-Day Program
From Skills to Summits.
This 2-Day Backcountry Ice Climbing Program is designed for BIPOC climbers who already have ice experience and want to refine their skills while exploring the wild beauty of the San Juan Mountains. You’ll spend Day 1 in the Ouray Ice Park sharpening technique, rope systems, and efficiency — then venture deep into the backcountry on Day 2 to climb a natural frozen waterfall alongside your guide and community.
Advanced ice movement and protection — refine tool placement, body positioning, and screw efficiency on natural ice.
Lead belay and multi-pitch transitions — manage ropes and partners smoothly on longer routes.
Backcountry travel, anchors, and systems — build anchors, handle approaches, and operate efficiently in alpine conditions.
Decision-making and route assessment — develop judgment for conditions, timing, and terrain safety.
Confidence for independent objectives — leave prepared to plan and execute your own backcountry climbs.
